Introduction to the Common Core

Here are a few ways the Common Core will affect the classroom:

  • Required Proof- Students will be required to back up their answers with proof from their studies, rather than simply providing their own (or the teacher’s) explanation. The goal is to produce students who can “read like detectives and write like investigative reporters.”

  • Speaking and Listening- There will be greater emphasis on speaking and listening skills in the K-12 curriculum, and more time will be set aside for collaborative classroom discussions.

  • More Technology- Technology will be essential to the curriculum, especially because the Standards call for more collaborating, publishing, and sharing, which is easily done with the use of technology tools.

  • Yearly Growth- Students’ understanding will be built on year after year, introducing new topics in each grade. This should encourage educators to prepare all students for the grade level ahead of them.

  • Added nonfiction texts- About half of the reading in elementary and three-fourths in high school is expected to be nonfiction. The Common Core also expects students to write in an expository style.

The Standards

  • Are aligned with college and work expectations;
  • Are clear, understandable and consistent;
  • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
  • Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
  • Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and
  • Are evidence-based.
